Hypertension, high blood pressure, is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease. Blood pressure is determined both by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure. The excessive pressure on your artery walls caused by high blood pressure can damage your blood vessels, as well as organs in your body. The higher your blood pressure and the longer it goes uncontrolled, the greater the damage.
In the U.S. about 75 million American adults (29%) have high blood pressure—that's 1 in every 3 American adults. Anyone, including children, can develop high blood pressure. It greatly increases the risk for heart disease and stroke and is the third leading causes of death in the United States. There are at least 970 million people worldwide who have elevated blood pressure (hypertension). In the developed world, about 330 million people have hypertension, as do around 640 million in the developing world.
